Pulp therapy refers to nerve treatment, in which diseased pulp is removed from the crown structure of the tooth. The primary goal of pulp therapy is to treat, restore and save the affected tooth. Pulp therapy can be performed on both primary and permanent teeth. Look online for the best endodontic dental clinic near you for this treatment.

What is Pulp?

The dental pulp is present at the center of a tooth. It includes blood vessels, connective tissue and various cells.

What are the signs that indicate that you need pulp therapy?

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Irreversible pulpitis (pulpal inflammation)
  • Recently traumatized young permanent tooth
  • Young permanent tooth with incomplete apex formation
  • When caries removal in deciduous tooth results in pulp exposure
  • Pain in tooth which subsides within seconds

To deal with any of these issues, visit the best dental hospital in Bangalore.

What are the contraindications for pulp therapy?

  • Excessive tooth mobility
  • Long-standing trauma to tooth
  • Uncontrollable hemorrhage during treatment
  • Periapical radiolucency seen in X-Ray of tooth
  • Thickening of the periodontal ligament (supporting structure of tooth)

What are the different pulp therapy procedures?

Pulp therapy can be broadly divided into two types:

  • Vital Pulp Therapy
  • Non-Vital Pulp Therapy

Vital Pulp Therapy: In vital pulp therapy, the tooth is restored without completely removing the pulp tissue of the tooth and only the diseased part is removed. It can be further divided into:

  • Indirect Pulp Capping: A decayed tooth is restored without exposing the pulp of the tooth and avoids more invasive procedures like root canal treatment or extraction of tooth. There is no direct contact with the pulp in this procedure.
  • Direct Pulp Capping: Vital pulp therapy includes controlling the hemorrhage and treating the exposed pulp, and medication is given to initiate the formation of reparative dentin over pulp.
  • Pulpotomy: Pulpotomy is performed on a decayed tooth in which only the pulp present in the crown of the tooth (part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth) is removed and the radicular pulp is left intact. It is mainly performed in children’s young teeth.

Non-Vital Pulp Therapy: This refers to total removal of pulp and maintaining the non-vital state of the tooth by filling radicular pulp with root filling materials and restoring the tooth. It is of two types:

  • Pulpectomy: Removal of pulp in deciduous teeth is also known as pulpectomy.
  • Root Canal Treatment: Removal of complete coronal and radicular pulp in permanent teeth is known as root canal treatment.

What are the benefits of pulp therapy?

  • Preserves vitality of tooth
  • Least invasive procedure
  • Initiate apex formation in young permanent tooth
  • Restores the tooth without removing blood supply

Conclusion

Pulp therapy is a cost-effective, non-invasive and effective procedure that preserves vitality of teeth and also saves the time of both the doctor and the patient.
