When is a Root Canal recommended?

A Root canal is a recommended procedure when the dental pulp (soft inner part of a tooth) is injured, inflamed or infected.

Some of the causes of damage to the pulp may include

  • Deep decay
  • Multiple surgeries on a single tooth
  • Cracks in the tooth
  • An injury to the tooth

Patients usually experience common symptoms such as pain in the tooth, swelling or sensation of heat in the gums. Dental Surgeons will take an X-ray, diagnose the issue and confirm if a root canal is necessary.

Who can perform a root canal?

In several cases, either a Dental Surgeon or an endodontist performs a root canal procedure. The patient shall be under local anaesthesia while conducting this procedure.

How is a root canal performed?

The root canal procedure contains 4 important steps. They are as follows:

Anaesthetic:

Firstly, the dentist surgeon shall place a minute amount of numbing medication next to the affected tooth. Moving forward, they will inject a local anaesthetic into the gums.

You’ll be awake throughout the procedure however, you’ll not feel any pain whatsoever during the process.

Pulp Removal:

Once the tooth is numb, the Endodontist will make a small opening on the top of the tooth. Once the damaged area is exposed, the Dental specialist will carefully remove the damaged area with tools knowns as files. After this procedure, the Dental surgeon will carefully clean out the pathways into the tooth.

Antibiotics:

Once the procedure is over, the dentist shall cover the open area with antibiotics to keep the ‘area’ from reinfection. Once these obstructions are cleared the tooth will be filled and sealed with a sealer paste.

Temporary Filling:

As the final step, the Dental surgeon will end the procedure by filling up the exposed area on the top of the tooth with a soft temporary material. This sealant potentially prevents canals from being damaged by saliva.

What are the benefits of a Root canal?

The benefits of root canal surgeries are several. They are as follows:

  • Prevents tooth loss
  • Prevents infection of the neighbouring teeth
  • Prevents complications of jawbone structure
  • Boosts overall oral health

Conclusion:

Root canals have a rich history and have been around for decades. It’s an ideal endodontic science which focuses on preserving the integrity of the teeth and can potentially lead to the maintenance of the overall health of an individual.
