medium

If you are a patient who is about to undergo any dental procedure, your dentist must have mentioned experiencing no pain during surgery. Usually, it’s called anesthesia. But in the case of dental procedures, conscious sedation is preferred. In this article, we will take a look at everything about conscious sedation and how useful it is:

Conscious sedation means one will be well aware of the situation and surroundings but will not be able to respond to the stimuli or experience pain. It’s like anesthesia, but here the patient will not lose consciousness. They might go for a deep sleep but will be able to hear everything.

About the procedure

Conscious sedation is a medical intervention used to relieve anxiety or pain during dental surgical procedures when the patient needs to stay awake.

The use of conscious sedation has been on the rise since the late 1990s. One of its main benefits is that it does not require general anesthesia, which can cause complications for some patients.

Conscious sedation can be administered orally, intravenously, or through a mask placed over the nose and mouth or through a face mask.

Who qualifies for the procedure:

  • Pediatric patients and specially-abled patient qualifies for conscious sedation
  • Patients who are extremely anxious before the procedure
  • Patients with gag reflex
  • Patients with a sensitive set of teeth

Why is the procedure conducted?

Basically, our nervous system has two ends- motor and sensory roots. Motor roots relay information about movements and muscle contraction, while sensory roots are about relaying information about senses like touch, pain, etc. Conscious sedation is a mix of sedatives that can numb the sensory part of the nervous system. That is why you will not be able to experience any pain during the procedure. But you will be able to see or hear what is going on.

How is the procedure conducted?

Any nurse, doctor, or dentist will be able to do this procedure because it is a very simple one. It is either given to you via IV or through a shot in the muscle.

Breathing and pulse rate can drop slightly, but this will not cause any breathing problems. In case required, you will be provided with an oxygen mask.

 Benefits of the procedure:

  • Less pain during the procedure
  • Reduction in patient’s anxiety
  • Increases patient compliance

What are the complications/risks after the procedure?

There won’t be many complications involved in this procedure. You will wake up from the sedation pretty easily. It takes about 30 to 60 mins for your sedation to kick in. And it wears off pretty quickly. You will not feel pain during the effective period.

But, once the anesthesia wears off, you might feel some pain, and your mouth might find it quite difficult to adapt to the changes. For this, your doctor might prescribe you some pain killers. Pulse and breathing rate will be back to normal in no time. You can get discharged within a few hours after the procedure is done. But make sure there is someone to pick you up after the procedure. It is not advisable to drive or go to work right after the procedure.

Conclusion:

Conscious sedation is a very simple and easy procedure to perform, and any nurse or doctor will be able to do it with ease. There is absolutely no reason to panic about it.
